Skin Resurfacing

Quick Links Overview |
Skin Resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure used to rejuvenate the skin. A CO2 laser is used to gently remove the old and damaged skin. Then the natural healing powers of the body create new, youthful looking skin to replace the aged skin removed by the laser.
The CO2 laser is a high energy infrared beam of light which is used in both surgical and cosmetic procedures due to it's level of precision and short healing times.
The laser emits a short burst of energy which vaporizes the outer layer of the skin, without damaging any of the underlying layers.
The procedure is performed in our outpatient area usually lasts around an hour depending on the extent of resurfacing needed.

Step 1 - Anesthesia
Some discomfort is to be expected during the procedure. Your doctor will discuss the options available to minimize the discomfort during the procedure.
Options may include:
- General Anesthesia
- Pain Medication
Step 2 - Resurfacing
- Your doctor will begin by making one pass with the CO2 laser to remove the outermost layer of skin. This is the layer containing most surface blemishes and fine wrinkles.
- Then a second pass will be made to precisely tighten and shrink the aged and damaged collagen containing structures, which cause deep wrinkles.
- Some patients with severely damaged skin may require additional passes.
After a skin resurfacing procedure your skin will be very delicate and sensitive. For most patients, it will take 7 to 10 days for the skin to rejuvenate itself.
Below is a list of things to keep in my mind while your skin is healing:
- During the first few days after the procedure your face will be wrapped with a bandage to help control secretions from the skin and promote faster healing.
- After resurfacing it is normal for the skin to "weep" and crust over until the new skin has grown. Dressings may be applied as well to aid in the healing process.
- Over the first few weeks after the procedure your fresh pink skin will turn to a more natural tone.
- Sun block should be worn when in direct sunlight.
- Make-up can be worn after the first week.
Suggestions From Other Patients
Below is a list of helpful tips from previous resurfacing patients:
- When scheduling your procedure, check your calendar for any special events that might occur within 3 weeks of the operation.
- Keep in mind that anything you use or wear for several days might be stained by the ointment used on the healing skin.
- Have a good supply of clean towels and wash cloths on hand.
- To minimize discomfort after the procedure, use a straw when drinking and eat foods that do not require you to open your mouth very far.
- Wear tops that button because it may be uncomfortable to pull shirts over your head.
- Avoid getting close to a stove or oven for a few days after your procedure as it may produce a burning sensation similar to a sunburn.
