Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure which can improve the appearance of the lower and upper eyelids. The area around the eyes is also rejuvenated, which makes you look rested and alert.
Blepharoplasty can specifically treat:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
There are three major steps in a blepharoplasty procedure:
Step 1 - Anesthesia
This surgery is done under local anesthesia with sedation from Valium or in combination with Zanax in our outpatient surgery area in the office or it can be done under general anesthesia in the hospital
Step 2 - The Incision
Incisions are carefully made with a CO2 laser in the natural contours of the eyelid in order to conceal any scars.
Drooping upper eyelids can be corrected through an incision along the natural crease of the upper eylid allowing the repositioning of fat deposits, the tightening of muscles and the removal of excess skin.
Conditions of the lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin in the lower eyelids is removed.
A transconjunctival incision, which is hidden inside the lower eyelid, is an alternate technique to correct lower eyelid conditions and redistribute or remove excess fat.
Step 3 - Closing the incision
Eyelid incisions are typically closed using one of the following methods:
- Removeable or absorbable sutures
- Skin adhesives
- Surgical tape
The results of eyelid surgery will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside to reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region, and an alert and rejuvenated appearance.
